About Us

Gilbert Elementary School is located in the scenic mountains of Northwest Georgia and has a beautifully landscaped campus, which overlooks the Pigeon Mountain Natural Resource Preserve to the west. Gilbert’s 65,789 square foot facility came about through the consolidation of two schools in the Walker County School system. Aging school facilities and an increasing enrollment in the early 1990’s prompted the Walker County Board of Education to construct a new campus to house the population of Fortune Elementary School and West LaFayette Elementary School. In addition, students from North LaFayette and Pond Springs Elementary were redistricted to the new campus. Gilbert opened its doors in August of 1994 to 606 students in pre-k through grade 5.

Gilbert Elementary School was built on land donated to the Walker County Board of Education by the family of Mr. C.C. and Ellen Gilbert of LaFayette, Ga., and the school was named in honor of the donors. The Gilberts were prominent in establishing the Bank of LaFayette as a major financial institution in Walker County. The Bank of LaFayette continues today as a major contributor to the B.E.A.T. of Walker County.
